Critique my style?

Post by grafter »

SORRY meant to post this in Style ! Please move mods :)

Ok I will (Hopefully) be getting a full time job soon so will have a shedload more money to spend than I had as a skint student.

Anyway with that money I want to be buying more clothes, here is the sort of thing I wear at the moment

Im thinking I need to sort my hair, and reinvest in skinny jeans. Any other ideas?

Try to not wear a lot of lighter colored clothes unless you get a tan.

I do like the leather jacket.

What type of pants do you wear? There were only two pics that were more than half of your body so it's hard to judge your shoes and jeans.

I suggest darker colored jeans/pants, avoid washed jeans(I find that look to be way too bland).

I see a lot of potential with your hair, like short on the sides, trim on top. Maybe use some gel too. I strongly recommend checking out a few barber shops/salons and asking the pros for opinions for what style fits your head. Almost all the time they'll hit it right on the nail and get you a good cut.

I absolutely hate skinny jeans because they just look too tight and honestly no one wants to see the outline of your package(or pants sagging which I see a lot of people do now with skinny jeans). A good alternative is slim fit jeans(and looks better too).

When you have the funds check out H&M, Forever 21(They have a men's section and a lot of women to ask opinions too), American Eagle, Aeropostale and Express. I didn't name Hollister because you can find everything there at any of the places I mentioned at a much cheaper price.

Also buy everything that fits you, nothing a size too big or a size too small; it just looks sloppy.

Is a fake tan acceptable too?

Yeh its a cool jacket, my ex bought it for me, spent a shedload when I could barely afford her xmas pressies oops :P

All my jeans I dislike, I honestly don't know where to go with jeans. I will definitely try some darker ones thanks man.

I just had my haircut today (before reading), sounds a lot like what you suggested :) Great minds!

Really? My winggirl says skinny jeans are sexy. But I will deffo try some slim fit :)

Shoes wise I have recently splashed on some converse. Or I wear some smart black shoes :)

Size wise I struggle because I am such a yo yo dieter. I used to be HUGE, lost like 5 stone then put a couple back on over uni, I go up and down but I am basically slap bang in the middle of my biggest and smallest now.

I know some people that fake tan, not my style, but if you're going to do it make sure it's professionally done so you don't end up looking all orange.

For jeans I'd stick with Straight Fit or Slim fit with a dark tone; I'll leave skinny jeans up to you cause if you can rock them, might as well wear them, but for me it's just something I've never found appealing.

Just remember, when buying clothes, buy what fits you at the moment and if you're going to lose weight, don't spend THAT much in one shopping session either. Try going to buy clothes at least every 3 weeks, or at least do some window shopping and try stuff out. You'll be surprised about what you'll find.

Hey grafter,

One thing I've noticed while on spending time in the states is that fashion tastes differ greatly. I've always liked Allsaints and Religion but both looks are now highly copied and less original than they were a couple of years ago, still worth a look if you wait for a sale... failing that, check ebay.

Got to work around your body type- make your best features stand out.

Also useful to pick a "look" that fits your personality. (Ex. Occasionally fuck w people and tell them I'm a pro surfer) Once you get some focus to your fashion you can expand and create a unique look that works for you.

Good questions to ask girls when your out and about and see what feedback you get consistently.

And yes your hair is plain, a little bit of sun wouldn't hurt (spray tan not recommended w/o a good base tan).

Just throw in my two cents here. Find a style/persona/character that works for you. For me its more of a countryish look. I wear boots and flannel generally or some kind of all American type tshirt.

An easy way to do that is check out movies or tv shows and pick a characters style you think would work for you and try to work off of that.

Agree with the haircut being plain. You want to stand out to some degree. Simply putting some gel in your hair and spiking it up a bit can make a very noticable difference. If you know any girls that are into cutting hair hit them up and get there advice and maybe a cut. Other guys have recommended going to a high end saloon and shell out some cash for a good haircut that works with your facial features and then take a pic so when you need to get it recut a cheaper place can copy it for you.

Personally I find tanning disgusting. I feel like a rotisserie chicken cooking in my own ass sweat lol. But to each there own. You are pretty pale/fair skinned so it probably wouldn't hurt if you can get outside without your shirt on much.

As a gym rat I am absolutely required to yell at you to get your ass in the gym if it is at all possible. You dont need to become a fucking bodybuilder but even a little bit of muscle mass can make quite the difference in your appearance plus added confidence which comes with that is never a bad thing. Questions on that feel free to hit me up I'm more then willing to help out anyone here with gym stuff.

I second what stone said but I also want to suggest that you invest in some type of jewelry. Jewelry can make a plain outfit look much better.

I wear skinnys and they are fucking awesome... Why? because they are apart of my persona (multiple necklases, bracelets, rings and a rocker type look) How tall are you and whats your body type bro?

If you are on the super heavy side I strongly recommend you avoid skinnys. You cant go wrong with straight legs man. Also if you are willing to drop $100 you can score some pretty cheap nice shit at a Nordstrom Rack store.

Check out the following brands:
Affordable brands:
Levis
HM
Gap
Guess

More expensive brands:
7 For All Mankind
Diesel
True Religion

Spray tan, no bueno

Tanning, while I feel ridiculous doing it, it has helped me a ton!

Everyone has different looks, your style needs to be congruent with who you are as a person as well as look good. I absolutely deplore skinny jeans...I think they make you look like you shopped in the women's section, but if you can rock them and like them, go for it. With my body time there is no way I could wear them if I wanted.

Macy's and Nordstrom Rack are my go to stores.

Macy's for shirts, V-Neck t-shirts, make me look like I actually have a neck when I don't, INC button ups because they fit me well

The Rack for Jeans. I prefer Lucky's. Just bought 2 pair a couple of weeks ago, normally priced 95-120, I paid 40 bucks each. Another 18 bucks to have both pairs hemmed. They now fit me perfectly with my dress shoes and I get lots of compliments on them.

Good shoes, casual shoes and dress shoes. I currently wear either Vans or primarily some dress shoes.

Just bought these:

Thinking about buying these:

For expensive stuff, try shit on at the store, figure out what you like, then shop on-line.

Watches can also set off an outfit and I get a ton of compliments on mine:

Shop around, hit sales, talk to the Hired Guns, etc.

Have to agree... there is some great stuff at HM and Forever 21 and it's cheap.

I go shopping every paycheck and pick up something to add it to my wardrobe.
