work hard or not really.

Post by S D »

for next 3 months I will be on summer break in my hometown 2000 miles away from where I live.

I need to make money and it can't be anything permanent.

this leaves me with the general summer jobs.

so I have been offered three jobs and need to decide by Monday and would greatly appreciate your guys' input.

One job is absolute cake. I will be working at a beach, fooling around, doing ticket sales, boat rentals, maintenance, etc. I make 8$ an hour and work 36 hours. ALONG with this job I would also be a casino valet working nights and weekends around 15 hours 7.50 + tips. I honestly think that these would be fun. valeting rich people's cars and hanging out at the beach with potential friends from work = awesome. around 400- 450 bucks a week.

the other job is everything the other job is not. I would be working hard labor at a construction company making concrete mother fucking panels. 60 hours a week with people who I don't see myself having that great of a time being around. (ie: a bit older, breadwinner for the family type person, been in industry for awhile.) This is HARD work. But also they pay 12 an hour + time and a half over overtime. so around 800-900 a week.

I have already done the concrete job before and I will say that I went through a somewhat tough time making it through 6 weeks, caused a breakup with girlfriend, and me being exhausted. BUT I made bank and she wasn't that great anyways ;)

I don't have a car. Don't have much money.

I mean lets say I worked 8 weeks making 8-900... (Lets be real I want a free month if I am going to swallow a pill like this for 2 months) $7200. I could get a solid vehicle, and get me money and be more comfortable.

working the other jobs I would make around 3500-4500 working the entire summer but I would be having fun :).

Thanks again guys and I look forward to your responses.

Personally, I live the philosophy of enjoying everything that you do, including work-wise. No brainer d here, I would take the fun job. While the pay is less, you'd be doing something fun, hanging around cool people, using your social skills, and not putting on excessive wear & tear on your body.

Honestly depends how desperate you are for the $

If buying a reliable car and having a base of cash for when you get back to school is a goal then take the higher paying one.

If thats not as important and you wanna kinda chill and enjoy your summer take the fun one.

What are your goals for the end of the summer? Thats the question you need to answer.

Quick update to all this.

I appreciate the responses greatly! :)

At dj and method. I was actually somewhat hoping to hear that. One of my friends commented that he was jealous that I had gotten the beach and valet jobs.

But stone and Ice (through pm) brought up solid points that what do I see as success and what my end goals are. And my end goal is to make money as quick as possible purchase a car and have enough money saved up to actually be able to relax about my finances. As getting my shit together with finances has been my theme for the past 6 months... Hasn't happened and it needs to. Rolling up my sleeves and dreading going into work for 2-3 months will only make me pursue a job in my degree/major field harder as well.

I called up an acquaintance to talk about the beach job and he said yeah it's great but after two weeks it becomes boring and people are so dumb that it just became annoying after awhile.

I have decided to take the concrete job I will be Mia from here for a large part of that time but will try to keep you guys posted on how it's going.

I appreciate all the response and feedback.

Will write a better response as I hate writing responses on my phone

so bringing this up.

I did this concrete thing for a month was able to establish a bank roll for poker and after that.. played cards through the summer up until school started. Because of this job I was able to make a ton playing poker and be able to afford a nearly new car at the start of the school year== score. really happy I went the hard way rather than wasting my summer at a beach job dealing with people's stupid service requests.
