Affordable Handgun

Hey Guys,
Just got my firearms purchasing card in Nj and only have 3 months to purchase a handgun before the permit expires. I am a newb when it comes to this stuff and dont profess to know much about which handgun brands are better then others and would like some advice. My main issue is that right now i dont have more then $500 to spend on one.
I cant carry it with me or bring it anywhere other then the range (NJ Laws) so the size doesnt really matter.
The main usage will be target practice and home self defense.
I would be ok with a good revolver but ive mostly been looking at .45 or 9mm

I know this is vague but most of the handguns i've seen online have been over 500 and thought you guys would have some basic advice for me.
