struggling to decide what to do with my degree

Post by Monteray »

So I am at uni studying a double degree in Commerce and Pyschcology part time

Originally I had intended to do professional accounting but thought it would help to add some other areas to study as well. and ended up with one of the choices being psychology.

Now that ive finished my first year, and just about to start my second year I realised that I prefer the psychology part of my degree far more than the business side. accounting is boring to me, and I dont even see myself working in this field and even if I did it would only be for the money which is not the kind of path I want to take in life.

Ok so my problem is that it is going to take me another 4 or so years part time just to finish my current degree, then I have to choose which way I want to go, either more study with psychology/med school. or go into accounting.

But another option I have that will shorten the length would be to drop the commerce/accounting side, and then I could have the undergad part done in under 2 years from now, then honours after 3 years.

So basically would cut 2 or more years off the process, then decide which way to go. either med school (pyschiatry) or masters (psychology)

pros
finish much quicker
doing something I enjoy

cons
if grades don't hold up will have to go different way.
don't have another degree to fall back on.
business will have solid jobs and money.

at the moment i'm seriosuly considering changing my degree, and taking a risk on it.

any advice or comments you guys have will be apprieciated.

thats tough brother

As I can only speak on my state Mississippi.Psychology degrees are dead fields.Out of every 5 people you meet 3 of them have a psychology degree.I know one older lady who has her master in it,and cant find a job.I use to work at walmart with a buggy pusher that had his master in it.I have meet countless people with there master but doing dead end jobs.As I said I can ONLY speak on behalf of my state.Another reason people major in it,well lets face it ,it is a easy major.

but you have to do what you have passion for

wow that sucks, its a fairly in demand job here in Australia, and the masters courses are so hard to get into it's like 1 in 20 get in, so you need excellent grades, and heaps of volunteer or paid work experience in the area to get through.

but what you say is correct the undegrad degree is no good by itself it is basically useless. but it's the key along with top marks that you need to get into further areas of study that do provide solid future job opportunities.

Life is too short to waist time doing something you don't enjoy, and if you're doing something you don't like, you'll probably never be that good at it anyways.

Unless you're going to be a doctor or lawyer, it doesn't really matter if your degree is in Accounting, Psychology or Underwater Basket Weaving. The vast majority of college grads don't work in fields related to their degree. So you might as well study something you like. The real value in your degree is that it shows you completed something, and employers like that.

Only 27 Percent of College Grads Have a Job Related to Their Major:

Dont do a career for the money, you will hate your life in 5-10 years. Do something you enjoy, if thats psych then try to find something else that might help supplement that.

I would look more into this Underwater basket weaving, that sounds hard as fuck

Ha! At least you guys have an accent. Apparently my accent is the most generic "American" accent possible. At least my Spanish is suave and sexy!
