Getting a gun licence in Australia...

Thinking about getting my pistol licence, I was talking to the grandfather last time I was up at his place about how stupid our gun laws are. Anyway he used to have all kinds of guns when he lived in the northern territory for shooting crocs and such and suggested I join up with a gun club and get a licence and learn how to do it.
I checked it out and this is what you have to do
Join a club.
Get a probation licence for 12 months.
Police background check and fingerprints.
but you cant buy a gun for 6 months.
when you can buy a gun you have to install a special safe and have the police check it at you house.
you need to apply for a permit to buy any gun (in addition to your licence).
You also need to now apply for a permit to buy ammunition. (in addition to the other licences/permits)
after 12 months you get a H class licence (pistols).
The best gun you can buy with this licence is a Glock 34 (longer barrel). any glock with a smaller barrel length is prohibited. i.e 19 is prohibited except for police and security
You have to go and compete in competitions, minimum monthly. can be more dependng on how many guns you have.
the gun must stay in the safe.
you must travel with the gun not loaded and the ammunition stored in your boot.
the police can search your house to check the guns at any time without a warrant.
I am keen to learn, I have only ever shot rifles on farms, but never any decent weapons or handguns. Do you guys think it is worth going through all that?
