So I'm looking for a good knife to purchase since guns are damn near illegal in New Jersey and I live in a somewhat less then desirable area. I've been on a few knife forums and have seen the names Emerson and 511 being talked about a lot. Any suggestions?

great post!
it really comes down to function and price
I sometimes carry fixed blades...but usually a folder
Don't use them too often for stuff like opening boxes at work, but when I did I used a different one than one I would carry on me for self defense.
Emerson are nice, but I had bad luck with them and the maid screw would loosen up and also a few lock failures...after that I got rid of the ones I had....but might pick up a custom Emerson someday.
Strider is as good as it gets IMO- SNG is best work knife ever
Benchmade makes some awesome ones, and a few are still in my top 5
Spyderco for less exp. models, first knife I ever bought was a delica, and got a new one a year ago- one of my carry knives when I travel
Microtech is great= but $$$
so first figure out price point- around 100 for a good one at least
then it's purpose
do NOT get a cheapy= very dangerous
a good knife will last you for YEARS if you dont abuse it or lose it
CRKT is about as "cheap" as I would go for a bang for the buck model
5.11...even though my good friend of mine designs knives for them, don't dig them- expect the Karambit
that help?

I was actually looking for a karambit. I felt very comfortable with the ones in Sedona.
Oh and what are some good sites to buy from?

The new Karambit 511 offers is great, and the new price is like half of what it use to be!
Amazon has 511 stuff for smoking deals. I've bought 511 cheaper there than with my factory hook up sometimes.
Stay away from botach and LA police gear. Many get burned and shitty customer service.

Looking for my first folding everyday carry knife.
Looking to keep in front pocket, so looking for something on the
smaller side.
Looking to keep price around $100
Any brand and models?
Bravo mentioned he had a Top 5 Benchmade, models?
Thanks
Kenny

everything I said covers what you are looking for
and I said Benchmade are still in my top 5, not a top 5 of them
eg. Ares is one of my all time fav. knives but think it is discontinued and cost over 150
so best to link to ones you dig- amazon is great for that, and then ask for feedback
really nowadays all I carry is my SnG Strider, my Karambit - 5.11, or my Microtech Ultratech
