I've been out to the range only a few times and been trying out new ammo
I'm liking the Winchester 9mm luger 124 grain full metal jacket
Before I buy 1000 rounds of it and stick to this as my ammo selection, is there any other brands I should be checking out?
I never really fully understood the difference between a lighter and heavier bullet. What's the difference?
The 124 has less of a snap than 147 I find. Would the 147 have more stopping power? Is it in fact a slower bullet? Thanks guys.
9mm ammo?

Re: 9mm ammo?
You have NO idea at the can of worms you just opened
for years there have been internet arguments on every gun site in the world- about which is better
more velocity or a heavier bullet
both have their points, so I just split the different and get 124gr
147-115, even seen some 90gr
winchester is good, I actually just bought that for target practice and oh shit ammo to stock up
but make sure you get hollow points for if you ever REALLY need it
I like Speer Golddot 124gr +p

Re: 9mm ammo?
I agree with Bravo, this is a age old question.
Personally I shoot the 10mm caliber because I prefer a fat slow bullet versus a smaller one going at warp speed.
I reload my own;
Hornady XTP, 180 grain bullet with 5.8 grains of Bullseye, bout 1180 fps muzzle velocity. That's a touch light but I don't like to approach maximum pressures.
Bravo is extremely correct when he says not to use jacketed bullet for defense. I have personally witnessed that bullet go through a enemy without slowing them down. Geneva convention and all that.

Re: 9mm ammo?
Thanks B - I'm glad I asked. I looked this up on google and tons of good reviews. The hollow point looks like a bullet that does more damage on impact = good for self-defense. I'll definitely look out for that ammo in town.
Whiz - I'm curious to know, how a bullet go through an enemy without slowing them down? This gives me the impression that FMJ's are weak but a bullet going through me would fucking hurt! lol

Re: 9mm ammo?
Hollow points work because of hydraulics
it hits a target that is mostly water (human body is around 80%) and it is designed to mushroom out
this slow it down so it transfers the energy to the target causing a permanent and temporary wound cavity
because it mushrooms open (or think like a race car parachute) it also gets bigger and hopefully hits something important
and because of all of this= it makes it less likely to over penetrate and do damage to something you don't intend BEHIND the target
lots of people get shot and it really doesn't do too much damage
others get shot and are OUT, like a Flagstaff officer here in Az years ago who got shot in the armpit with a .22 and bleed out before he could finish 1 sentence calling for help on his radio
it all depends on WHAT gets hit
support system= skeletal
nervous system
bleed out
major organ failure
- some drop the guy instantly, some drop him instantly and they can still fight, some take a while but are 100% fatal
even in my recent carbine class who was taught be a badass long time instructor I am friends with- he told a story where they shot a guy, guy goes OUT and drops, but once he hits the ground his blood pressure came back (no gravity to fight) and woke up and shot at them some more
crazy shit...
anyways think Whiz is talking about military and how they cant use hollow points- they have to use FMJ
Geneva convention rules on war and weapons

Wow.
I had no idea the physics involved in selecting the ammo and how it affects the target. So glad I asked.
Thanks B

Re: 9mm ammo?
Bravo's right on the Genova Convention. Any NATO or other signee agrees to wartime laws. Such as the treatment of POWs, Red Cross personnel, UCMJ manual and so forth.
When a FMJ round hits a hyped up man in combat, even though it may go through a lung, that enemy can fight a amazingly long time. There is a huge amount of aminetyrosine, Orexin and various adrenal stimulants. All of which are basically natural cocaine.
Bravo forgot shock value when it comes to a hollow point round. Imagine a hollow point expanding and exerting 1,000 foot pounds of kinetic energy into a human being. Now think of a FMJ going right through a person and transferring only 20 lbs or so. You can imagine the difference.
As always, where you aim that bullet is by far the most important thing you can do. If you can ALWAYS

Re: 9mm ammo?
isnt shock value the same as temporary wound cavity?
which actually what I always read was a big deal, the AR class I took with Giles Stock- who is a bullet expert and has done more ballistic gelatin testing than anyone I have ever heard of, was saying that really doesnt matter with handguns
rifle rounds it does
and am planning on going to the next gelatin test shoot his is doing

-also dont think 9mm will be hard to get, just low now, buying online and 223 or 5.56 will be hard because of talk about ban

Re: 9mm ammo?
I have heard a few doctors now say that in terms of getting shot that whole 147 vs. 115 has no statistical baring. It is getting shot Once vs. Twice that makes the difference. Hard to make an experienced opinion when your only opinion is based on the opinions of others.
Edit: I'm actually making that last comment about myself. In my experience most gun guys get rather defensive when you say shit like that to them. But I do hold myself to that standard.
