BJJ is, in my opinion, the very best martial art (if you had to only pick 1) for a 1-on-1 situation.
It is also, in my opinion, one of the very WORST martial arts for a non-1-on-1 situation like a bar fight where the dude probably has friends around. Nothing will end the fight quicker than you being on the ground with your opponent and his friend soccer kicking your head into oblivion.
Obviously it is best to de-escalate and avoid bar fight situations, but if you find yourself in one, what are the best strategies? Assume you have no weapons on you.
Methinks the quick and aggressive 1-2 punches to each opponent, then circle in a way that avoids you getting cornered by the group of people, followed by get-the-fuck-out-of-there is the best. Thoughts?

Also, having some wrestling ability is handy to AVOID anyone putting you on the ground...

Agreed walking away is the best. However if you can't then the key is to cause the most amount of damage/pain in the least amount of time. Kicks/Punches to the balls... eye gouges, using a chair whatever.
My dad taught me that there is not such thing as a fair fight. Get in, get out. survive.

gotta agree with tech's dad...
Martial Arts Knowledge is extremely helpful, but if it's a fight where the odds are against you, JASON BOURNE THOSE MOFOS
The little karate I learned was useful in getting my stretched out and flexible but as for actual techniques, I'd relie more on a fighting art where they still kill people (muy thai) rather than a competition art like karate, plus I learned some basic grappling from a bjj friend, I'm pretty comfortable on the ground and most people don't know what to do once they have you there.
As of recently I just carry the Karambit where ever I go. after seeing some basic moves online and seeing a few from Bravo, I'm pretty confident no one will fuck with me.

It would be awesome to fight....but when you think about it...no one wins...you are they to have fun and meet girls...If you fight it torpedos the night...violence is no fun...meeting girls is fun...
So walking away and creating space between the guy is key...In my five years of being in the game...I never been in a fight...and that is a good thing.....never close to some dude hitting me....yes I have been confrontation or dudes challenging my friend to a fight.. I will usually walk away and stand next to the bouncer and notify the bouncers...I will tell the bouncer that there is a trouble maker who is trying to start a fight...use the bouncers to your advantage....Many times I had a bouncer kick guys out of the club after I notifying them...The bouncers will key in and watch those guys closely....
I remeber a time when 3 dudes push a drunk dude down and were about to soccer kick him...I grab one dude from behind before he could soccer kick him...luckly another nice guy grab the other guy...After doing that I quickly located a bouncer and pointed out the trouble makers...they were quickly thrown out....point of the story is use the bouncers to your advantage..
Keep in mind I am a blue belt BJJ (under gracie jiujitsu, Portland, OR), brown in judo, black in kenpo karate, black in Taekwondo, and 4 years mma with Team Quest (gresham ,oregon), Team Raw (Los Angeles).

What are you thoughts on something like a mace/pepper spray pen?
Something like ~ http://www.amazon.com/Mace-Pepper-Spray ... B004MFOUWI
Could be used to get numbers and keep yourself safe.
I am really not into violence at all, but tend to fell threatened or at risk of injury one to two times a year in bar situations or while seducing the ladies.

I don't recommend using pepper spray for many reasons:The Outlaw wrote:What are you thoughts on something like a mace/pepper spray pen?

1. Hard to aim.
2. Gets not only into the attackers eyes but into the people around him too.
3. Very easily gets into your eyes=now you're screwed
4. Awkward to carry and pull out unless you have a purse, although that version is small and looks pretty cool
