I've got two dogs that I love deeply. I think of them as my children. They were one of the few things I fought for when my ex left.
Here's my dilemma..... Before I turn 30 (3 years) I want to travel, extensively. I don't want to have any plans, just "go where the wind takes me"
Obviously I can't take two dogs with me. I know my ex would have them back and take great care of them.
In my mind I'm thinking, I should just go ahead and give her the dogs now. I know they would be happy. Then the other side is saying....
Maybe my goals change and I don't end up traveling that much. If that happens, it would be pointless to give them to her.
It would break my heart to see them go. Maybe I'm letting my emotions cloud my decision making.
You guys always give great feedback and I'm glad I have a place to go for this kind of stuff.

Re: A man and his dogs....
I've wanted a dog for as long as I can remember, but I haven't, and the main reason is because of travelling and working away. It's a tough call, if traveling is something you definitely want to do, then giving them up is something you have to consider... but, there must be other options?
Have you thought about asking your ex to take them for you while you travel? Also there's nothing stopping you traveling domestically with your dogs, there's a lot to see in North America, easily enough to keep you busy for the next couple of years.
It all depends on where you're planning to travel, even without a plan... having an idea where you want to go and how long you plan to be away for is going to dictate your choices regarding your dogs.
