The 416s we had issued to us were approximately $1600 apiece with the 14.5 inch barrel and the full auto trigger group. You would need special paperwork for the 14.5 inch barrel, and I don't know if H&K offers the full auto trigger group on civilian models, but you don't need that anyway. Plus that would be more paperwork since it would be what's called a class III weapon. Semi auto can fire plenty fast and accurate enough.

LMT (Lewis Machine and Tool) also makes a good gas piston AR. That and the H&K are the two brands that the SEALs use. We tested the LMT when we tested the H&K, and it came down to us not wanting to wait a year or so for LMT to fill their military orders before they built our rifles, so we went with the H&K. So if you find one of those one gunbroker.com or somewhere like that you may consider it as well.


If you can afford an AR with the piston system instead of the traditional gas impingement system, that's the way to go, for the same reason Fame listed. Even if you get an AR with the gas tube, it's still a good gun, just gets dirtier which means you spend more time cleaning and lubing it.

Ok so what's the verdict on the smith and wesson mp15....I'm leaning towards this after originally going to def. go with the AK..through advice here

The Smith wouldn't be bad at all. Just make sure it's not any more expensive than a Colt, Bushmaster, or Rock River Arms--those are your three main quality brands so you wouldn't gain anything from buying a Smith & Wesson if it costs more than those. But if the price is similar you'll be just fine with it.

i had a saiga 47. but i figured that the only reason i have is is in case of civil unrest. and should i be lucky to get to the zombie apocalypse stage i may as well have something that feeds american sized bullets

I hadn't thought about state laws regarding that stuff. I'm in a state where it's pretty much the wild west here as far as being able to own guns and carry them. I guess Florida would probably be the only other state more laid back about weapons. Just pass the fed. background check and you're good to go in our state, and then if you want to carry a concealed weapon it's an easy process with a joke of a 8 hour class/qualification.

MA sucks when it comes to guns...you can't get a lot of the good stuff, and licensing isn't any easier. I never carry, because even if I'm in the right, I'm in the wrong in this state.

What are you looking to do with this gun? I own both an Original Colt SP1 1970's AR, and a new Century Arms GP1975 AK. Each gun is completely different. I wind up shooting my AK a lot more just for fun, and It's pretty much just as accurate out to about 100 yds as the AR, and costs far far less. You can buy an excellent AK47 for around $700, while a good AR will run you upwards of $1000 or even $1500. Ammo is also far cheaper for an AK, and I honestly think that the 7.62x39 is a superior round than the 5.56x45 in every aspect except effective range (which is pretty much a non-issue outside of military applications).

Personally i would recommend an Arsenal Saiga AK47, they're excellent guns and only run $650-$800 depending on model. As a bonus, it also takes me about 2 minutes to clean my AK, versus a good 15 for the AR.

If you do wind up getting an AR, don't get the S&W, they're far overpriced for what they are. As said above, Rock River arms is good and so is Bushmaster and Colt.
