I've been researching the statutes in my state regarding carrying knives and below is a summary of what is legal and what is not:
Legal:
It is legal to own a Balisong, or butterfly knife
It is legal to own disguised knives like lipstick knives
It is legal to own a Bowie knife
It is legal to won throwing stars and throwing knives
Any weapon for which a person has an explainable lawful purpose for owning
Illegal:
It is illegal to own any weapon, with the purpose to use it unlawfully against the person or property of another
It is illegal for a person convicted of certain crimes to own a gravity knife, switchblade, dirk, dagger, stiletto, or other dangerous knife
It is illegal for certain mentally ill people to own a gravity knife, switchblade, dirk, dagger, stiletto, or other dangerous knife
It is illegal to own a gravity knife, switchblade, dirk, dagger, stiletto, or other dangerous knife with any explainable lawful purpose
With the above being said, it is legal to open/conceal carry a knife as well in NJ. I'm not that well-versed in what dictates a good knife vs a great knife.
Also I'm looking into finding knife courses in my area to learn how to properly use a knife for self-defense purposes (or for the extent of the law, a lawful purpose use) as well. I also carry a tactical flashlight with me at all times and would be my go-to in case I really needed to use it.
What are some suggestions for the above legal knives to carry?
Thanks!

If you haven't seen this yet, it's a fairly recent thread that asked the same questions as you have
