Some of you may know that I have started taking steps to arm myself with the skills necessary to defend myself and my loved ones. I have taken up Kali, Kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am wondering if anyone here has had success from learning from books and videos to prepare yourself before class or to decrease the learning curve in class. If you guys have any Reccomendations for me to look into to improve my fighting or tips than I'd appreciate it.
I.e. Legit YouTube channel, blogs, books, or instructional videos.

Re: Resources on Practical Defense
Hey magnetic , congrats on taking up various self defense courses.
I recently joined a systema /MKJ school. I have just recently joined so I know how difficult it is at first.
One thing I noticed even when the instructor demonstrates something it looks simple enough but when you go to replicate it I have difficulty remembering it all.
My instructor has a youtube channel where he demonstrates techniques with quick explanations.
You could ask your instructors if they do the same and famaliarize yourself with whatever subject you'll be learning.
It helps when you recognize it but nothing helps you learn it like practicing and getting feedback from the instructor. Hope this helps.

Spar as soon as the coaches think you're ready. Theres nothing that can prepare you betterfor one on one combat, but real life one on one combat.

We've been sparring every class and I've been feeling how real the pain is...Sometimes I doubt if our instructor will teach us the correct forms at times with new students mixing in with the older students. It's a great academy and I'm constantly sparring/rolling with my friends from other gyms to season my reaction/mental model of fights.
