I recently wanted to start working out and have a healthier and stronger body but I will start to feel light headed, my vision starts to darken and I have a hard time breathing. I wanted to start off with just push ups, sit ups and chin ups because I wanted to get use to working out before I start buying equipment.
Im 24 now, I have a slim build but for the past 5 years I drank a lot and the past 3 years I smoked a lot. I cut back on my drinking and trying to quit smoking. What do you guys think?

Re: Blacking out while working out
Is the light headedness stuff when you are actually doing a pushup or is it between sets when you are resting before starting again?
I've gotten lightheaded but that is during a max effort exercise or immediately following the finish of the exercise and only lasts a few seconds but no breathing issues.
Are you holding your breath while your performing your exercises for multiple reps? If so... dont. You need to be breathing.
A few articles that might help regarding breathing...
if you are using a belt ---- http://articles.elitefts.com/training-a ... ing-belts/
was trying to find a decent video on valsalva breathing but couldnt find one. This guy talks about breathing in a series of articles which may be of use.

Most importantly, if you are damn near passing out, and you aren't holding your breath please go get seen by a doctor. Something wrong is going on and you need to get it checked out.
If you do go practice any of this stuff or continue how you have been you absolutely must stop as soon as you feel any of your symptoms coming on. It aint risk potentially injuring your self in a serious manner like that.

Right on keep us updated.
It very well might be that your outta shape.
I know my first time doing sled pulls I was on the ground afterward for 30 minutes with my legs cramping and unable to catch my breath lol. After a month that wasn't an issue any more though.

Make sure you're not dehydrated before working out. Have you ever tried to drink the amount of water, per day, that is generally recommended? It's a lot. Think about a whole two liter coke bottle, except water. Your piss should be less yellow and more clear the more hydrated you are. Take it from someone who has blacked out from being dehydrated before.
I've had this happen some as well. Glad to know I'm not the only one. I haven't been drinking as much water as I should myself. So I'll need to work on that.stone wrote:I've gotten lightheaded but that is during a max effort exercise or immediately following the finish of the exercise and only lasts a few seconds but no breathing issues.

I used to routinely lose the ability to read or watch TV after MMA practice. One of the first things to go after a hard workout is your vision. I was also dehydrated but during a fight you don't get to drink whenever you want so practice was the same. You don't need to do that.
Hydration, diet and how your treating yourself now are factors. Listen to Stone he has this stuff down.

I wouldn't start out with too much either. Like the other guys said, hydration is important but so is not over doing it. You spent the last 6 years treating your body like shit, don't expect it to be nice to you when you push it to the limit. I know my body hates exercise and I can get pretty lightheaded after working out.
You could also have a heart or lung problem. Definitely worth getting checked out by a doctor.
