Need Help With My Look. Too Plain. Accessory Needed?

Post by johnjm22 »

What do you guys think?

Everything is fitted and looks decent IMO, but I just feel like it's too plain overall. Maybe I need an accessory to spruce it up?

I don't want to look boring, but I don't want to look cheesy / try-hard either.

Find a bracelet or ring with a DHV story attached to it, and you'll look money

After PX5, Ice, Moiser, & I hit up the mall, and I picked up a jet black metal ring from Aldo. It lets me transition nicely into Rings Routine, and it includes a cool story about how I got it while hanging out and doing cool stuff with a bunch of good friends in AZ ;)

A little more color wouldn't hurt, imho. Something to draw people's eyes. You've got a solid color for pants, and a solid color for a shirt. If it were me, I would go with a different shirt that had something more going on. The pants are fine, especially if they show off your ass. Just sayin'.

One of my best shirts for attracting attention is a black Wheel Of Fortune T-shirt that says:
G_
F_CK
Y__RS_LF
...would you like to buy a vowel?

People open me all the time when I'm wearing that. Kind of ironic when you think about it, actually.

Accessories would help, but I think you're right that it's too plain and conservative. Maybe a graphic tee with a blazer would be a step in the right direction? Or perhaps just a more patterned shirt (still playing on the conservative side, though).

I'm by no means a fashion expert, but hopefully that can get the ball rolling.

First off, I used to be a stylist for Nordstrom, Express, Banana Republic, Saks Fifth Avenue and Salvatore Ferragamo. Everything I suggest comes from experience. I keep up with current fashion trends and I have been to many fashion trade shows since one of my businesses is in the trade show display industry. I am very critical of myself first before giving anyone any fashion advice. Just my disclaimer :-)

Your overall look isn't too bad. It is kind of plain and makes you blend in to the crowd. Designer jeans tells a girl you know your ish, especially if they are style conscious...which most of 8,9's and 10 are. (7forallmankind, Rock & Republic, Diesel, G-Star, True Religion). Jeans can also become a topic of conversation...almost like peacocking. Then when she brings it up, you down play it..

The Black Shirt is cool. To levelup: Look for a nice Grey vest. Check out John Varvatos @ Nordstrom.

Accessorize:
Try some silver chain-linked bracelet on the right wrist and a nice watch on the left wrist. Accessorize. Have something that can become noticeable and possibly a topic of conversation. Suggestions? If you have some money to spend check out David Yurman. Awesome & masculine looking jewelry. If you want to keep it conservative, check out your local jewelry shops at the Mall. I am sure you will find something you will like.

Shoes: Nice. Check out: Mark Nason Shoes http://www.marknason.com
Great way to stand out - by default!!!

Get a watch, a big fat one

Undo one more button down.

One more thing with the shirt, maybe try checks, or something with a few things on the shoulders I don't know the correct name for them. or other style stuff on the shirt that make it less plain. but best to try that stuff on at the shop and see if it suits you first.

Otherwise overall it looks really solid man, and I still want those shoes, they are mint.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try out some of the stuff that's been mentioned, and see what works for me.

fiercestallion: Good suggestion on the shoes. Those actually are Mark Nasons!

I've actually considered getting some tattoos on one of my arms. You never look plain when you're tatted. It basically works like an accessory, and if gives girls something to comment on.

It is on the plain side. Could go into something like this:

https://www.google.ca/search?q=mens+but ... B300%3B578

(Note the top and side buttons on the shirt)

Also - I'm liking the patterned shirts too (like what you and Bay had at PX)

Lastly - keep mindful of bl - Chest out, shoulders back, and relax

I think it's a pretty good look for you, nice and clean. Looks sophisticated.

Would echo what the other guys have said, spice it up with some accessories on your wrists.

I wear a similar style to clothing, although the info above is great.

I brushed off peacocking for the longest time, although a friend of mine brought it back up (I used to wear peacocking things before pick up and I got opened ALOT). Here's a few things that helped me do this...
-Belt Buckle (Make it visible)
-Crazy Hair style (Try it out different hair styles, maybe even have a line going through your head or a thunder bolt)
-Recommendation for clothing colors: Burgundy, Grey(mixed with other colors), Light blue(mixed with dark colors), Red(you'll get lots of attention) and they definitely should be applied to pants. Update your wardrobe and keep mixing up your colors, especially if you're in your 20s to early 30s.
-Weird phone cases
-phone screen
-phone ring tone
-backpack
-socks for sure(find the weirdest ones that you like haha)
-bringing foods to class
-doing accents for fun
-going out with your buddies and dressing up as a particular style (I had a blonde wig and we're in a band called Metallic Orange Juice)
-colored contacts
-Umbrella that sticks out (i.e: looks like a samurai sword)
-Dressing up on any of these holiday; St Patricks, Valentines, Halloweens ofc, Presidents Day, Chinese New Year (Bruce Lee/Jet Li), and more. If they ask you, tell them you're celebrating the spirit of the holidays to its fullest. YOU ARE THE PARTY
-Even in your bedroom, if you bring a girl back
Theres more....

Remember, use the strategies that other people use to your advantage. Take that idea and mold it into something you'd like. Are you afraid of people judging you or are you afraid of discovering new ways to succeed? (This is what I have observed up until now from family, friends, others, and myself).
Plant a seed and let your lifestyle grow and let it branch out in all directions. Become the tree of life that stands tall in a forest of many.

Get a watch. My personal favorite I bought for 125 bucks. Ken Cole, I've been opened by countless people because of it.

Bracelet on the other wrist. A ring would be cool and as mentioned above could help you transition into a routine.

Likely it's my unjustified hatred of brown shoes. ... But try some black dress shoes to help take it up a notch.
