Pencak Silat is good too, it's used a lot by security agents (if you are only looking fo self-defence).

If you are looking into doing no contact martial arts I recommend you doing Tae Kwon Do. Their are other forms of martial arts however that are good like ninjitsu, ninja, and krav maga. Kick boxing is also good.

Im curious how many street fights have you been in? How many sanctioned fights?

People I know would disagree with you on kicking. I agree high kicks in a street fight are uneccessary. But do you know what a structure break is?

Also thaiboxing teaches a very effective use of standing clinch. I would argue that when it comes to a street fight thaiboxing is more usefull than BJJ. If you triangle someone from your back on the street and they pick you and slam you...you are fucked! What if they just bite you leg?

The gym is one thing. The street is another.

I can't even begin to recount the amount of fights that I've been in. I've had far more fights in the street than I have in a Thai Boxing ring or on the BJJ mats combined. I grew up in a rough area and had a big mouth and wouldn't be pushed around by anyone. Sadly this led me to get more whoopings than I care to remember.

Thai boxing is very useful and I agree about the close quarters clinch work. What a lot of people seem to forget is that BJJ is not just for fighting on the ground. I once fought two people at the same time, outside a kebab van. I arm dragged the closest guy into a standing rear naked choke, then used him as a human shield/ barrier between me and his mate for a couple of seconds (until he passed out) then when he was out, I could do whatever I liked with his friend. As it happens I did take him down and ground and pounded him until he was asleep too, but I could of kept it on my feet if I wanted to, and would of if there were more people around (it was just the three of us and the guys working in the van).

Most Krav Maga instructors have just gone on courses for a few weeks and most of what you're learning is complete BS. Unless you're learning from the Israeli special forces themselves, I wouldn't train it.

As I said before and has already been stated, Thai Boxing, western boxing for stand up and either wrestling, sambo or BJJ for the ground and you'll be tougher after 6 months of dedicated training, than 90% of the guys walking the streets.

The best type of martial arts is the one you identify with & can utilize in a combat situation.

"The man who knows 10,000 techniques will always lose to the man that knows 10 techniques but can make them work."

Honestly in my opinion MMA is by far the best because it encompasses all areas of combat except weapons. On the street its not about forms its about controlled chaos. If you can control yourself amidst the chaos of a real life situation then that's half battle. Composure is key. Without composure you have nothing. So regardless of what you do spar spar spar. You have to be able to use what you know or else what you know is useless.
