Why are you starting off shooting at 20 yards? Start off at 5 yards! I recently did an intense 2 day combat pistol shooting course, and nothing was over 7 yds away.

Thanks guys - great advice!

madmax - I have dry-fired before (without bullet or dummy bullet) - I've heard this is hard on your firing pin so haven't done it as much as I'd like to. Is it true that dry-firing with empty chamber is hard your gun? I will try those drills next time I'm at the outdoor range (hopefully this weekend!)

lfthk1, The reason I'm shooting at 20 yards is b/c the indoor pistol range is set at 20 yards (cannot move targets closer or longer). I will be going to the outdoor range and moving to 5-7 yards. 20 yards is out of my league right now.

Stone, thank you. Now that you mention it - I am pretty sure I am pointing the gun down at times before the recoil in anticipation of it. My shots are all over the map - varied each time - no pattern. It looks like what a shotgun blast would look like (never the same area).

Should you be locking your elbow when firing? How about flexing/locking your wrist? I haven't done either but wonder if I should be... My stance is like a muay thai stance. left foot towards target, right foot back and pointed towards 2'oclock. I lean forward at times, other times I just stand straight up (while keeping feet in shooting position)

ICE,
Contrary to popular belief, dry firing will not hurt your pistol. Handguns are combat arms, like the Samurai's short sword. Light, compact and built to take rough use.
As far as stance, you said that you are getting into ISPCA or IDPA and the best stance by far is Iscocoles. It allows for groucho, torso twist, and lateral movement while shooting.
Dry firing allows for perfect practice. You can see how much movement there is in your sight picture when the shot breaks.
Next Level Shit: I tell my advanced students in precision shooting. "Think of a freehand painter when you present the pistol. The natural wobble in your hand is perceived by your brain as your sight picture wandering wildly across your target. If you can calm your mind to complete your trigger press while the brush paints the target without trying to set the pistol off when everything "looks" perfect, you will see the magic of "the mind guides the bullet". Rifles are Science. Pistols are Art.
