AK-47 or AR-15

Post by lfthk1 »

What do you guys recommend as a good brand for each? I'm looking for something besides pistols to shoot. Was going to go with the SW Mp15, with upgraded barrel etc. for about $1500, but really don't want to spend that much. AK seems much more reasonably priced.

I vote for the AR. You can probably find a Bushmaster or Rock River Arms cheaper than the S&W, but I haven't looked at prices in a few years.

An AK will shoot more reliably than an AR when it's dirty and needs lube, but the AR is more accurate and is obviously of higher quality if it is mil spec. The AK is accurate enough to hit torso shots or up close head shots all day long but in the end, the AR is more accurate. Plus your weapon won't often get so dirty that it malfunctions anyway unless you're shooting a ton or too lazy to clean it at the end of the day. I've attended courses where I've shot my AR all day long and didn't have time to clean the gun at lunch so I just lubed the weapon and it kept on trucking; it just sprayed a little lube out the ejection port each time I fired.

I'm not an expert but I've been using the AR-15 lately and loving it (shot with one earlier today).

I know that the Atlanta PD use the AR-15 for the rifle certification course.

There aren't any like you would see with most other weapons. For instance, you can't get a Colt Ak 47 or a Smith and Wesson AK 47. They're all soviet bloc or mainly Chinese imported surplus weapons from companies like Samco or Norinco. Supposedly the Russian/Soviet ones are better than the Chinese ones but I really don't know a whole lot about AKs. I've handled and shot them at work but everything else I know is just from talking to people. I'm much more familiar with the AR15 since that's what I'm issued and one of the firearms I teach, and I own one personally as well.

AK's are for commies and commie wannabes.

AR all the way, I would actually advise:
http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_products ... eneral.asp

That is the civilian model of the m416, (specifically manufactured for special forces)

Exactly! We carried the 416 when I was on the SRT and it was pretty damn sweet. You could flip it to auto and shoot a tight group with no problems at all. I loved that gun. The worst part of leaving the team was turning that in and going back to a plain jane AR. Amazing how much cleaner and more reliable the piston system is. But you'll pay more for it. That would be the only drawback I could see in it.

There is also the Sig-516. There model of the AR platform. I have the Sig-556, shoots smooth and straight and has virtualy no recoil, and it's pretty well made since its a sig and comes with the mounting rail so you can add attachments to it.

I like the AK-47 as well, its reliable and can take any form of ammunition good or cheap. It was made to be a easy and reliable weapon for conscripts in WW2 so take it for what and when it was made. It's still being used today so it' has stood the test of time.

Also don't get a gun willy nilly, ask yourself why your getting this gun and what your going to be using it for. I wouldn't go out and get and H and K unless I either was

A- on a special forces team not someone that just wants to think they are cool by buying a gun made for them. Which if you are special forces the government just buys you what you need anyways.

B-I had the money to blow on a gun like that or was a serious gun enthusiest.

Go with Rock river arms they are good and priced for people looking to get a medium range rifle with out the big price tag.

If you want an ak-47 you can go to gunbroker.com and check out there slections. It's like Ebay for guns. They make tactical ak-47's and you can also just get the regular ones, the Ak-47 will be cheap between 500-800 dollars.

The AR will be more expensive depending on the brand and add ons you get for the rifle.

If I'm not mistaken the AK47 wasn't introduced till 1947--hence the 47 in its name.

Can go Rock River Arms, Can also check out cheaperthandirt.com and get your fill of "what should I get"

Leggo Reason A is incorrect. The government doesn't buy you the weapon, they issue it, BIG DIFFERENCE. 2 it's more reliable than the other AR platforms. Why wouldn't you want it other than, the not enough money factor.
